Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one’s self-esteem. That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily. ~Thomas Szasz
We are learning creatures and lifelong learning is what makes us human and our lives worthwhile. This year I am stretching and taking two online Art classes. Wee! One class I am very comfortable with, the other class, well, I am way out of my comfort zone on that one. My Inner Critic is buzzing with excitement. Ha ha ha! Learning gives us new perspective. Learning helps us adapt to new situations and think creatively. Learning deepens our character and gives us subject matter for social gatherings. We adapt better when we are learning new things. For those reasons and many more, I try to learn at least one new thing a day. That is how I found my word for the year. I was listening to NPR when Linguist Christopher J. Moore came on and he was talking about some of his favorite “ untranslatable “ words. He spoke of the word MERAKI said it was Greek. Meraki means the soul, creativity or love put into something; the essence of yourself that is put into your work. I wear a many hats and do many jobs as a mother, spouse, sister, friend, artist, part time dental technician and I want to be able to infuse Love in to every job that I do. Therefore, MERAKI for 2015! Let the Meraki Dance begin!
